Contest: How Many Diapers in a Week?
Pite┼čti, Romania

Did your childhood math teacher ever make a guessing game out of a jar of jellybeans? Well, I've got something like that in store for you:

Behold! A pile of Aidric's soiled diapers! Gloriously repulsive, isn't it? I should know—I changed nearly all of these myself over the course of a single week.

Ah, but for you, the fun starts where my dirty job ended. Take a stab at estimating the number of diapers pictured in the pile below and you might very well win a prize!

I'll contact the winning entry via e-mail and ask for a physical address where I can send your lovely winnings: a kickass postcard from me! (Which will have a little journey of its own on its way to you.) Hey, at least the stamps will be moderately interesting to look at for a bit.

Fine print: Only one guess/entry per person, accepted only in the comments section on this travelogue entry. Nearest guess to the actual number of soiled diapers in the pile wins, regardless if you've over- or underestimated the value. In the event of a tie, I might send out more than one postcard (if I'm feeling generous), otherwise I'll probably come up with something even more disgusting for you to look at to break the deadlock. Contest guessing period will end when I feel like it.

My guess is 56. I could be way off, but I'm thinking it is changed every 3hrs or so. That would be 8 diapers a day times 7 days.

I guess I will find out if I'm close or way off lol…

Why not utilize cloth diapers to reduce waste and cost?

Secondly, general question, how do you finance your living abroad?

Good travails!

@Curious:

Tatiana's comment in this post can speak to your diaper question:

"I cannot imagine us traveling around with pooped cloth diapers to save on the expense of the disposable type at the cost of grossing our hosts out. We are very thankful for convenience items such as baby wipes and disposable diapers. The cloth type needs not only washing, either by hand or machine, but also boiling for disinfection and stain removal, and this is done in an enormous pot purchased only for that purpose."

See the rest of that post (including the comments) for how I've managed spending wise in Eastern Europe. :)

Typically 4-6 diapers per day at that age x 7 days = 28 to 42 diapers. I would have to guess 33.

I am happy to report we're on the tail end of diapers, so I don't really want to spend time calculating how many you're changing in a week :)

Considering mine is about the same age, and we do about 5-6 diapers a day (some times more), in one week that'd be about 42 total. :) Sounds like there are some other people really close in that grouping..perhaps they have been in our boat with little ones and diapers! :)

THE WINNERS

Well….. there's actually a tie. The winners are Maya and Julie, each with (respective) guesses of 28 and 30.

The actual number of diapers was only 29, as Aidric apparently needed a bit more fiber in diet to get things moving this particular week. Normally, it's much higher.

Postcards for both you two from Turkey!
