Turkey Removes Pier Wood During Winter
Mersin, Turkey
Easily one of the most peculiar customs I've noticed along the coast of Turkey has been the stripping of wooden planks off the piers during the winter months. Each and every single one I've seen is nothing more than a skeleton of steel, burnt orange in places from rust.
I've been told by Turks (who couldn't imagine it any other way) that the wood is expensive, and that "Yes! Of course we take it off during the winter" to increase the lifespan of the purchase.
